Restocking the River

 FISH RESTOCKING 2011
DO IT This year or leave it until next year?
Early in 2011 the Kyalite Rivers had been taking a battering.  Floods had created heaps of black water resulting in considerable loss of aquatic life.
As the normal time for our Annual Fish release neared the waters were not showing signs of improving.  There was a genuine concern the poor quality water would kill off any released fingerlings before they had a chance.
Early in March Murray Cod Hatcheries  rang. Our quota of native fish fingerlings for the 2011 restocking project were ready.
When did we want them??
The question really was “Did We want them??”
With plenty of black water still hanging around many fishing Clubs were putting off their release until much later – even until next year.
Members of the Kyalite Happy Hookers were getting lots of advice – all of it negative. It was getting to cold, the oxygen level to low, more black water coming down, getting to late in the year etc etc.
As the month drew to an end the waters were improving and the final decision was to  just get on with the job!
Jackie from the Murray Cod Hatcheries came down from Uarah on Sunday March 27th. She had a shipment of 1300 Murray Cod and 3700 Golden Perch.
Lots of eager helpers. Members of the Pike family from Ballarat chipped in. Ryan Standen and his mates grabbed a few boxes for their end of the Wakool.
